At the time of this writing, the north
coast beaches located in the former Navy controlled eastern portion
of Vieques are closed to the public.
Playa Yayi is one of the north shore beaches declared off limits
to the public by the US Department of Fish and Wildlife, which is
the government agency that is now in control of the former Navy
firing range. Playa Yayi is located in what is known as the Live
Impact Area (LIA), the most heavilly bombed, blasted, and shelled
area of Vieques.

Hopefully those boaters at the beach won’t set off any any
UXOs with their anchors or by stepping on one. UXO is the term used
by the military to describe unexploded ordnance or more simply put,
bombs and other explosive devices that didn’t blow up when
they were supposed to.
West of the navy fence, however, there are a good number of beautiful
sandy beaches belonging to the Municipality of Vieques where human
beings are allowed to swim, snorkel and surf to their heart's content.
In the following pages you will find some photos and information
that we have gathered concerning some, but by no means all of these
beaches. |
