Chris Nye, Peter Plummer and Company

The guy heavily tanned with black beard looking over his shoulder at the camera was, I think, Bob Teytaud who was a Crucian wiith a biology degree who owned the Herreshoff 28" ketch named "Lotus" which he wrecked tacking engineless out the entrance of Bare Ass Bay. It was taken over to Cruz Bay and pulled up on the beach near the cemetary and there Paul Johnson repaired it. The guy in the bow could be me, but it's hard to say.
Peter Muilenburg

Jerry,
The photo is indeed of Peter Plummer, in bow, Chris Nye, in yellow shirt and Bob Teytaud looking over his shoulder at the camera. The picture was taken in Cruz Bay as we were heading out to Bare Ass Bay, Great St. James where the boat was wrecked. Notice the lack of boats (1972) and the longer sleeves for the early morning chill. Bob Teytaud, native Cruzan, was working w/ the Dept. of Conservation and Cultural Affairs as a biologist who specialized in lobster (we all did or tried to) habitat, migration patterns, breeding cycles and was working on a project for his Masters in Marine Biology. Peter Muilenburg is indeed correct regarding the fact that the boat, S/V Lotus, was sailing out of the bay, w/o engine, on a Starboard tack, in light airs (notice water condition in photo) when it got in irons and drifted onto the rocks at the west side of the narrow opening. I was supposed to go sailing w/ Bob that day, along w/ my girlfriend Bonnie, but declined because we had a baby goat(!!) that Kenneth Marsh had asked us to take care of when the dogs killed it's mother. We rented a little cottage in Carolina from his aunt, Gerda Marsh(actually it may have belonged to Florence Marsh, but Miss Gerda handled the rental and had to return to Coral Bay to take care of the goat. I had always felt bad about not going that day, figuring that I may have been able to help prevent the mash up, as Bob was sailing alone that day. We were all going to go get some lobsters, drink some beer and have a pleasant sail. Peter Plummer was on the 35' S/V White Squall w/ the lady who took the picture. He had previously lived in Coral Bay-on the Carolina road-where his was a school teacher and had taken over the boat and thus a shorter commute to the Cruz Bay school. Bonnie and I later took the boat from him and had it for the next 3-4 years. My brother sent me the photo from Alaska (?) where he found it by putting my name on a search engine (maybe he is checking up on me!). The other two guys in the boat are ringing bells in the back of my foggy memory, but as of now I can't put a name to them. When I remember where the boat and motor came from (there were almost no small outboards around in those days) I may get names for the other two (one could have been a friend/brother of the Cruzan). Hope that this was of some help. I'll check some of my old photos
Chris Nye

Just discovered your website - and as a former resident of St. John, I was absolutely delighted to see the older photos!
Hannele, I think that we had been acquainted back then, but did not know each other well.

First, the fellow in the boat, in the white hat just might be David Knight (The late Dr. George Knight's son, who now lives on St. Thomas) David and I were friends with Chris and Bonnie, and it hit me as soon as I saw the photo...
