Calabash

Calabash tree, Caneel Bay Resort, St. John Virgiin Islands

Calabash trees are often planted as an ornamentals or for their large fruit which can be dried and used for bowls, water jugs or musical instruments. A native of Africa, the calabash may have arrived on St. John with the slaves who worked on the Virgin Islands sugar plantations.
