Pelican St. John USVI

Old Stone Bridge

Excerpted from St. John Off The Beaten Track

Old Stone Bridge, St. John US Virgin Islands

Across the road from the Fredriksdal ruins is a seldom-used trail that was once part of the Old Danish Road. It leads to a fairly well preserved stone bridge that is almost hidden in the thick bush. Note the depth and the width of the gut and the height of the bridge. To necessitate the building of such an elaborate bridge, there must have been a regularly flowing stream here in the past. The fact that the streambed is now almost always dry indicates that the amount of rainfall on St. John has decreased substantially over the years.
